A thorough move-out cleaning is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your security deposit. Landlords consistently cite cleanliness as the top reason for deposit deductions. This room-by-room checklist ensures nothing gets missed.

Kitchen: Clean inside and outside of all appliances (oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher). Remove and clean stove drip pans. Scrub the sink and faucet — lime deposits count. Clean inside all cabinets and drawers. Wipe down countertops, backsplash, and light switches. Clean the exhaust hood and filter. Sweep and mop the floor, including under the refrigerator.

Bathroom: Scrub the toilet inside and out, including behind the base. Clean the tub/shower thoroughly — pay special attention to grout and caulk. Wipe down the vanity, mirror, and medicine cabinet (inside and out). Clean exhaust fan cover. Mop the floor and clean baseboards.

Bedrooms & Living Areas: Fill all nail holes with white spackle and sand smooth. Touch up paint if you have matching paint. Clean all windows inside (and outside if accessible). Wipe down all baseboards, door frames, and light switch plates. Clean closet shelves and rods. Vacuum carpet thoroughly — consider professional carpet cleaning for stains.

Throughout the Apartment: Replace any burned-out light bulbs. Clean all light fixtures and ceiling fans. Wipe down all doors (both sides). Clean window blinds or wash curtains. Clean sliding door tracks with a toothbrush and vinegar.

Often Missed Spots: Inside the oven (this one catches many renters). Behind the toilet. Under the kitchen sink. Tops of cabinets and refrigerator. Closet corners and shelves. Air vents and returns. Garage or storage unit.

Professional Cleaning: If time is tight or you want a guaranteed result, professional move-out cleaning in LA typically costs $200-400 for a one-bedroom and $300-600 for a two-bedroom. Many professional cleaners offer a deposit-back guarantee — meaning they'll re-clean for free if your landlord finds issues.

Timing tip: Schedule your cleaning for the day before your final walkthrough. This gives you time to address anything you might have missed without the pressure of having to be completely out.
