A practical, no-nonsense guide to decluttering your apartment in just two days. Less stuff, more space, better living.

Clutter accumulates slowly and then suddenly you realize you can't find anything, your closets won't close, and every surface is covered. The good news? You can reset your entire apartment in a single weekend using the room-by-room method.

Before You Start: Gather supplies — trash bags, donation boxes, a "sell" box, and a "relocate" box for items that belong in a different room. Set a timer for each area. Having a deadline prevents the endless "should I keep this?" deliberation.

Saturday Morning — Bedroom: Start with the easiest wins. Clothing you haven't worn in 12 months goes in the donate box. Bedside table clutter gets sorted — keep only what you use nightly. Under the bed gets emptied and reorganized. Closet gets the hanger trick: turn all hangers backward, and over the next month, turn them forward when you wear something. Whatever's still backward gets donated.

Saturday Afternoon — Kitchen: Check expiration dates on everything in the pantry and fridge. Duplicate gadgets? Keep the one you actually use. Tupperware without matching lids goes in the recycling. That bread maker you used once? Sell it. Clear countertops of everything except daily-use items.

Sunday Morning — Bathroom & Living Areas: Expired medications and old cosmetics go first. Keep only the products you use regularly. In living areas, apply the "does this serve a purpose or bring joy?" test. Old magazines, broken items, and impulse purchases that never found a home — out they go.

Sunday Afternoon — The Digital & Paper Sort: Shred old mail, file important documents, and recycle everything else. Unsubscribe from catalogs. Set up a simple filing system: a small accordion folder with tabs for medical, financial, rental, and personal documents.

Maintaining the Momentum: The one-in-one-out rule is the simplest maintenance strategy. Every time something new comes in, something old goes out. Schedule a 15-minute daily tidy — set a timer and race through putting things back where they belong.

If you're dealing with larger organizational projects like closet systems or shelving installation, a local handyman can help you set up the infrastructure that makes staying organized easy.
